12 questions about The Roscoe Experiment
Even non-dancers can't resist to move to these psychedelic, sci-fi beats and BeSonic could not resist to ask 12 questions about this outta space experiment:
1. Where are you from? How did you get your project- name?
I'm currently based in the 'sunny' Midlands, in the UK. My girlfriend liked the name Roscoe, and the whole project started out as a bit of an experiment... so we just put the two together and it sounded official (and maybe just a bit remeniscent of Roswell) - so it stuck.
2. How did you get involved into music?
I always wanted to be a musician. I started off playing bass, and then graduated onto gutiar and the occaisional vocal. I used to be in a songwriting duo, calledTruism, where we used basic sequencers (playstation) and cheap drum machine presets for beats. Then I bought a proper sampler, and also learnt to play the drums... samplers and synths have long been a part of my sound, they've gradually taken over.
3. What are your influences (e.g. bands, styles, circumstances)? Your personal way of music?
My influences are quite diverse, bands like The Eels, Fear Factory, The Dandy Warhols, The Chemical Brothers, Beck, Prodigy, Blur, Plump DJs. I tend to listen to guitar music more than electronic music... I think this probably has a large effect of the way I approach things. I like melody, and big choruses, songs that pick you up and drag you in.
4. How would you describe your music?
Psychedellic Big-beat or Sci-Fi Not-Dance. 5. Which is your best way to write songs/music? How can you work most efficiently?
I dont have a set way of working. Sometimes I'll start with a sample or loop... maybe an ambient noise or sfx, and mess with that till i have something i like. Then build the rest of the track around that. Other times I'll build a beat from scratch and take it wherever it wants to go. I dont use computers to make music, somedays I'll limit myself to one particular piece of equipment, it makes me work in different ways... I couldn't say I've ever been efficient... each tune takes as long as it needs. I tend to lock myself away with them until they're done... sometimes it'll take an afternoon, others a week.
6. What was the last CD you bought and why did you buy it?
I think it was The Dandy Warhols - Odditorium (or The Warlords of Mars), and why? Because The Dandys are great and they have a wicked sleazy groove thing going on. Its an excellent album, it was either that, or The Futureheads - News and Tributes.
7. Are you also working together with other musicians as guest players or in collaboration?
I'm currently working with german hip-hop artisterazethe borders on a couple of tracks, he's a top guy who makes beautiful, high quality music. I recently remixed a track calledDesire Mistress, for French synth Nouvelle Culture. I guess I love to collaborate, you can learn so much from it as everybody brings something different to the mix - and its fun! I'm always on the lookout for new opportunities...
8. Which is your favorite location to play and where will you play next?
At the moment I have been playing mostly parties, as I am still working on the full live show...
9. Do you have a video to your music?
Not yet! I'm on a site in the UK which runs a monthly competition in which they make a video for the band with the most votes/points at the end of the month... But, if there's anybody out there workin with video/images who fancies experimenting on some of my stuff - please get in touch! 10. Do you have other profiles next to the one on BeSonic? Yeah i have a couple....myspace.com and there's one on mp3.com.au as well. 11. Plans for the future?
Obviously I'd like to finish working on the live show, and get that out there. To keep creating, I'd quite like to find a vocalist to work with on some electronic funky-soul. Oh, and maybe invent somekind of MIDI hat...
12. Anything you want to add at this point?
I'd like to thank everyone at Besonic.com for their support, and for having such an excellent platform! And I hope everyone has a good one!
